Registration of Copyright is not compulsory
Copyright registration only provides a rule of evidence i.e. the copyright registration can be used as evidence when such right is disputed in a Court of Law…. Thus, acquisition of copyright in a work is automatic and it does not require any formality.
You can search through copyright files by visiting the Copyright Office at www.copyright.gov/records (see Figure 2, below). All copyright information is located in the Public Catalog (click “Search Public Catalog”) which contains information about works registered since January 1978.
The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years.
